braiNY is Back!

March 10-16 is Brain Awareness Week, and nearly 1,000 public events will be held around the world. If you live in the New York City area and want to get in on the action, you’re in luck, because there’s seriously something for everyone.

Want to hear some live music? At ArtLab, brain activity will be transformed into song in a live music-infused experiment featuring the talents of singer and multi-instrumentalist Lora Faye and jazz drummer William Hooker. Looking for some stimulating family fun? Head on over to the BioBus or the BioBase for cool, hands-on neuroscience activities and games.

Fancy listening to stories while sipping a cocktail? Check out Story Collider at Littlefield in Brooklyn for a night of storytelling about mental health. Feel like exercising your body and your brain? At NeuroYoga, you’ll be guided through the postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), deep relaxation (yoga nidra), and meditation (dhyana). In the last 15 minutes a neuroscientist will discuss the effects that practicing yoga has on the brain. Want to know more about memory? There are three events that address this topic: Enhancing Memory, Staying Sharp, and Alzheimer’s Disease Forum. And it doesn’t stop there. There are more than 20 other events to choose from, with topics ranging from poison to dyslexia to face transplants.

These events are a collaborative effort called braiNY (now in its second year), spearheaded by the Greater NYC Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience. For a complete list, visit the braiNY website at comebebrainy.com.
