Humans are social creatures. A crucial part of our sociability is our capacity to attribute thoughts, beliefs, and emotions to others. Called theory of mind, this capacity helps us infer and understand others' actions. Scientists continue to debate whether theory of mind is a uniquely human trait or whether apes also possess it.
